In the week before Christmas 2011, Melissa went to the doctor to have a seemingly innocuous breast lump checked only to be devastated by the news that at 29 she had breast cancer. As her world stood still she thought of her children and vowed to fight. She started chemotherapy immediately, had her lymph nodes around her breasts removed and endured radiation. Approximately 12 months after being diagnosed, Melissa was given the news that she was cleared of breast cancer. She had won this battle! Melissa being who she is went back to work in a law office and continued with her Law Degree, life returned to normal.
On Saturday 27th July 2013, Melissa and her husband Jonas along with her children Jasmine and Noah were heading to her parent’s house for dinner. When they arrived Melissa suffered a seizure on their front lawn. An ambulance rushed her to the Cairns Base Hospital and a CT scan revealed that she had multiple tumours in the right hemisphere of her brain. She was given the prognosis that her condition was inoperable. Melissa and her family were devastated. A second opinion was sought and still she was told inoperable, incurable. However Melissa would not accept this and she contacted world reknowned neuro surgeon Dr Charlie Teo. Dr Teo met with Melissa and upon inspection of his MRI scans it showed Melissa had in fact 6 brain tumours not 3 as first thought. Dr Teo said he could remove 3 of the 6, the 3 that were causing the seizures, finally some hope! The very next day Dr Teo operated on Melissa and 3 days later she was home with her family. Melissa was by no means cured but she had more precious time with her husband and two small children.
In Early January, Melissa and her family were given the devastating news that she only had a life span of approximately 2 weeks to 3 months.
Melissa's goals are now focussed on her family and their future. Her wishes are that they will have some money aside for Jonas to take some time off when the unthinkable happens, so he may spend time with their children so they receive all the love and support that they will require at some time.
As a Mum, Melissa needs to know her family will be ok. They are her world.....
