Melissa Diane Malishan was born October 2, 1980. At the age of 13 months old, she was rushed to Sacred Heart Hospital because both of her kidneys collapsed and she almost died. After 2 months of peritoneal dialysis, her kidneys started functioning but only at 75%. As Melissa grew, the percentage of kidney function became less and less.
In high school, at the age of 15, Melissa was diagnosed with high blood pressure. She was in the tenth grade playing varsity basketball but had to quit. She was devastated. Soon after, she begin to get really sick. Melissa missed 80 days from school during her tenth grade year but with the grace of GOD, she managed to pass to the 11th grade. Also, Melissa finished high school on time.
At the age of 18, Melissa’s pediatrician and nephrologist at the time, told her that she would never be able to have children. He said if she did, she would have a stroke, be in a vegetative state, and end up in a wheelchair the rest of her life. Little did the doctor know. As a matter, He even told her that if anyone would have told him that Melissa would live to see the age of 18, he wouldn’t have believed it. As time went on, Melissa did become pregnant. God told me in prayer that her and the baby would be alright. At the age of 20, Melissa birthed a beautiful baby girl (our miracle baby). Her name is Markiera Divine Jackson, who is now 16 years old “TO GOD BE THE GLORY”. Not only is she a basketball player but she has been playing varsity since her 9th grade year. Markiera continues to give her mother a fighting chance. However, a year and a half later, both of Melissa’s kidneys shut down completely.
At 21 years of age, Melissa was on dialysis a second time for one year. During that year, I was being tested to donate a kidney. In 2004, I donated a kidney and it was a great success. But four years later, In 2008, the kidney started rejecting due to an infection and it had to be removed. By this time, things began to get worst. Since that time, Melissa has been on dialysis a third time for five years.
Finally, after coming to grips with everything, Melissa began to think of her and Markiera’s future. She enrolled in college again to complete her degree and continue to raise her daughter. However, things were beginning to get even tougher due to Melissa being on a set income (disability). She was doing well for a while, then anxiety begin to set in. Melissa begin going to the ER a lot. One night her blood pressure was so high we rushed her to the ER and that night, she had her first of many seizures. Being the fighter that she is, Melissa was still trying to live. Having faith in GOD, she has always attended church. She finally found her calling in the LORD as a praise dancer.
But in 2014, tragedy struck again. One Sunday morning, while at church, Melissa started feeling bad. She told one of the church members “I just don’t feel right”. She said she had a headache. Melissa left church and drove herself to hospital/ER. Again, they diagnosed her with anxiety, gave her two strong medications (sedatives), and released her. On her way home she had a one car accident. A lady, who was a nurse, came to her aid and called 911. The ambulance took her back to the same hospital/ER and by this time, Melissa had slipped into a coma. The doctor ordered a C.T. Scan of the head and discovered she had a blood clot on her left side which pushed her brain to the other side. Immediately, she was transported to another hospital that had a neurosurgeon on staff. He was called in to do emergency surgery. After surgery, the doctor told us he could not tell us what the outcome would be. But GOD knew! Again, Melissa came back. After two weeks of being in a comatose state, Melissa woke up in her right mind, she knew everyone and she talked. She came out of this with a little short term memory loss. She hurt her back in the accident which causes her to have chronic back pain and she walks bent over. She also lost mobility or the usage of her right arm. But I am yet believing in GOD that he is a healer and he has more miracles in store for Melissa. GOD has a plan and a purpose for her life. Part of her skull was removed during surgery. She is waiting for the doctors approval to have that part of her skull put back in. Also, this year, Melissa had to have a third fistula put in to continue dialysis. Melissa’s accident effected our lives tremendously. Melissa needs full-time care. As her mother, I am her full-time caregiver. Rody, my son, as often as he can, supplements her income because being on a set income, at times, presents a challenge regarding daily living expenses. Lastly, the accident, somewhat, stripped Melissa’s companionship with her daughter Markiera, who is a beautiful young lady that we are all invested in. Depression has set in. Some days are better than others. She has lost some hope but not all.
I just want something good, for once, to happen in my daughter’s life that will break the cycle of mishaps, disappointments, and sickness. Whatever you can do for my daughter would be a great moment in her life. It will bring happiness, joy, and a memory for a life time. Please brighten her days!!
