Melissa McGill Church, my twin sister, passed away tragically on September 25, 2020. She suffered acute stress after giving birth to her healthy son, Henry. The stress resulted in the onset of postpartum psychosis and Melissa took her own life, only a week after Henry was born.
Our family was unaware of the gravely serious mental condition that is postpartum psychosis. Thus, Melissa’s tragic death has motivated us to raise awareness to help prevent other women and families from experiencing the same tragic loss. While we are still grieving and mourning Melissa, we are learning more about maternal mental health and what we can do to help spread the word. We intend to establish a foundation in Melissa's name that will help our efforts at fundraising to support organizations driving policy change. Our mission is to drive change in the healthcare system and to spread awareness of maternal mental health. Your contribution will help our family to do these things in Melissa's honor.
As an occupational therapist for the Brownsburg Community Schools, Melissa devoted her life to helping her special needs students every day and all those she worked with. She was everyone's best friend, the most welcoming neighbor, an award-winning twin sister, a dedicated dog mom, a loving wife, a proud daughter, the most beautiful singer, and so much more. We want nothing more than to honor the full and gracious life she lived by helping others because that's what she would be doing today. If there's a way to help other women and their families avoid enduring a loss like this, we are going to try everything in our power to do so.
The Church and McGill families are eternally grateful for the expressions of sympathy in the passing of our beautiful Melissa. We all miss her terribly and are consoled by our memories of her loving, caring disposition, thoughtfulness, kindness, and dedication to helping those in need.
