Melin Daron Restoration Project- Aberdaron

We are a community-based organisation (Melin Daron cyf) focussed on restoring and developing our village of Aberdaron's historic Grade II Water Mill, which dates from 1252.

Our village proposal is to renovate and reinstate the Mill to its 19th century former glory. At present the building is in a serious state of disrepair, but with your donations and the support of the community, we aim to safeguard and revitalise the building. We plan to restore this important asset to our community for educational, tourism and heritage purposes.

CAN YOU HELP US? We urgently need to protect and winter proof Y Felin from the weather until work can commence next year. We would be very grateful if a local business was able to support with either labour or materials; 200m2 UPVC sheeting/4 x 50m rolls of rabbit fencing mesh/ roll of 130 x 2.5mm fencing wire.
If you are able to assist in any way please contact us at [email redacted]

The project will accentuate the architectural and historical importance of the Mill, whilst also focusing on the significant economic benefits of bringing it back to commercial use. The idea is to restore the building and existing machinery, and once operational, produce genuine welsh flour from local wheat sourced from local crops. This flour will then be used to produce breads, cakes, pastries and a range of innovative produce, including health and fitness bars. Our vision is for school children to then be able to visit and grind locally grown corn into flour and bake bread in the adjacent Islwyn Bakeri the same day and for visitors to share this experience.

Melin Daron will operate as a social enterprise, and as such will provide training education and volunteering opportunities as well as creating much needed jobs in this part of the Llŷn Peninsula.

Aberdaron is a welsh settlement with strong cultural, religious, literary and historical traditions and which has also attracted visitors to the area since the 19th century.  Click here for more information about our beautiful village.

We are keen to work with other local heritage centres such as Plas Carmel, Porth y Swnt and Canolfan Felin Uchaf.  We have also joined the Heritage Trust Network.
