Dear all,
My mum’s home island has faced even more difficulty with another earthquake hitting this morning.
Our family and friends have lost their school friends, teachers , colleagues and the death toll is rising.
Mama and her community will be organising a cargo + donation service to be sent over. I will update more details of this once confirmed for those wanting to contribute supplies. However this page has been set up if you are wanting to donate money.
Friends and family in Palu, Sulawesi and surrounds, please know we are thinking of you and praying for your safety and health in this hard time.
Details:
- A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck the Indonesian island of Sulawesi on Friday at about 6pm and was followed by a tsunami with waves up to 6m high.
-The current death toll stands at 832, but expected to reach the thousands.
-A 14-day state of emergency has been declared in Sulawesi.
-Authorities have said the final death toll could reach the thousands as rescue teams push into the Donggala region, which was directly hit and is home to 300,000 people.
-In some of the smaller villages and subdistricts around Palu, it is feared entire communities of up to 2000 people have been killed after mudslides submerged and crushed their homes.
-In Palu, authorities are preparing a large mass grave for the burial of the bodies which have been piling up over the weekend.
-Some telecommunications had been restored to the area but there continues to be no power in Palu.
-There is also a shortage of food and fuel in the city, with huge queues at petrol stations. Our family and friends are currently camping out and have told us they are safe and staying hopeful. Babies, mothers, fathers, grandparents and children are all camping out and eagerly await support and aid.
