Melanie's Cancer Story

My very dear friend and colleague was recently diagnosed with colon cancer.  For those of you who know Melanie, you know that she is an extraordinary human being.  She is cheerful, loving, unbelievably strong and always puts her family, friends, and students before herself.  Her last name is not included on this fundraising page to provide privacy for her two young children. 

During the past two weeks, Melanie learned that the pain and sickness she has been battling was due to cancer.  It has already been determined that the cancer has spread from her colon to her ovaries.  On Monday, she will undergo surgery.  After the surgery, the doctors will be able to give her a better idea of what the treatment will be going forward.  As of now, it looks like she will need six months of chemotherapy. 

Although she has medical insurance, there are still many treatment-related and everyday expenses that Melanie and her family are confronting.  Working for a school where teachers do not receive pay over the summer combined with the inability to continue with her usual summer employment is an additional hurdle.
