For a Heart as Big as Megan's

Megan is an early childhood educator and world traveler. She's also a steadfast friend, an amazing sister to my husband & a loving daughter. Megan is my sister. Last summer, her life had faced an unexpected change, putting a halt to her career and travels. Right now, my sister needs your help.
In August of 2016, a routine checkup turned into an appointment with an endocrinologist, who discovered irregular thyroid and kidney. This was a total shock that hit close to home for all of us, still grieving the loss of her beloved father the year before. He himself suffered from kidney failure, and was graced with a donation from none other than Megan's mother. Was our family going to face this all over again? Two weeks after the appointment, Megan was hospitalized for blood pressure that risked a stroke or heart attack. It was on this weekend that she was diagnosed with kidney failure, operating at just 20%. Reality had finally sunk in.
In light of this circumstance, Megan had to learn to adapt to a new normal. A calendar filled with appointments, lab work, and consultation pulled her from the her preschool students and children she nannied. A known artisan of the homemade pizookie, she had to swallow the bitter pill of a dietary restrictions and lifestyle changes. The problems of daily life had become so suddenly trivial, none more so when Megan found herself in November on the kidney transplant list at the Loma Linda Medical Center. Two months later her kidneys functioned at 11%.
We found out this past March that Megan had found an approved donor, overwhelming us with relief. However, the donor would not be able to undergo surgery until the end of July; we have been hoping and praying for her kidneys to operate in the meantime. This took a blow when on May 4, Megan received a catheter in her belly to begin the process of dialysis.
In the meantime, our family and friends are doing what we can to support Megan in her difficult situation. Dialysis keeps her away from the classroom and homes where she nannies, professions put her limited immune system at risk. With a 6-12 week recovery period after the transplant surgery, Megan will be unable to work for at least the next four months. At this time, the cost of treatment, hospital stays, and the necessary medications will continue to pile up.
Our family is reaching out on behalf of Megan. Her boundless passion for seeing the world and innate compassion for child development has led her across adventures big and small. Her big heart and bright smile has helped students, friends, and family grow an understanding of the beauty around them and within themselves. She spoils my son, who runs to his auntie with the biggest hug a two-year-old can give. She loves our babies with every ounce of her being, to say she is loved & appreciated is an understatement.
