Marlee's Story

Donation protected
Meet Marlee, a 20 pound 3-4 month old Lab puppy mix that we recently pulled from a local shelter. This little girl was among 101 dogs that were scheduled to be euthanized on 9/11 because the shelter was grossly over crowded. I filtered through dozens of photos of dogs needing homes over the past week and a half. A wonderful local fellow rescuer was going into the shelter day and night to take pictures of these dogs and promoting their sweet faces on social media. It was because of her and the awareness she raised with local rescue groups willing to help that almost every single one of the scared shelter dogs were pulled and are now safe! It was amazing. It wasn't until a few days ago when the last few faces left in the shelter were posted and a final plea for help went out, that I discovered little Marlee. They had taken a video of this little creature shaking in pain in the corner of her kennel. I do not believe it was on purpose but somehow this little one got lost in the mix and was lumped in with the unadoptable dogs. This was mostly due in part to her terrible injuries. Marlee was hit by a car and dumped at the shelter 1 week prior. She was never given medical attention and had been living in the shelter in severe pain. As you can see Marlee sufferers from lacerations to her back paws. She has fractures in her pelvic area and a major fracture in her femur. She sat quietly unnoticed and suffering in the midst of the chaotic overcrowded shelter and was almost overlooked completely during this rescue effort. When I found her I immediately reached out to the rescue group I volunteer for, RescueConnect of NC. Despite the fact that RescueConnect was already overwhelmed with the multiple dogs they were pulling from this shelter situation, they instantly helped me get Marlee out. We rushed her to the vet for medical treatment. She is completely shut down and terrified but she is one of the strongest dogs I have encountered with these types of injuries. After further evaluation it appears that Marlee has been severely neglected and may very well have been a street dog before her accident. She is slowly learning to trust people and is starting to realize that she is being cared for. Unfortunately, Marlee is going to require multiple surgeries to save her leg. If we can't get her the surgery she needs they will have to amputate her leg. Marlee is young and strong. She deserves the chance to play like a normal dog and be happy. This is something she has probably never known. Please join myself and Rescue Connect of NC in helping little Marlee. There is no donation too small.
