Medlife Mission Trip to Cusco, Peru

Today, I sit here in the air conditioning, drinking an iced coffee, knowing that I can use my iPhone to call the doctor's office if I feel sick, and can quickly drive up to the pharmacy to pick up anything I need. I have the privilege of having health insurance to help out if something more serious were to happen, but many people in other parts of the world are not so lucky to have any of these things. It is easy for us to view things like clean water, sanitary bathrooms, vitamins and medicines as necessities or givens but in reality, these are privileges that so many are born without.

Today, Over 1 BILLION people are facing a critical shortage in health care and of the 200 million people experiencing poverty in Latin America, an estimated 70% have no access to basic health services. 

In Peru, most roads are often unpaved and unsafe, schools are stocked with only the most basic teaching supplies, and the nearest hospital may be up to two hours away by car, which makes it nearly impossible for its population to receive the medical help that they deserve. The MEDLIFE Movement provides basic health care and development to these communities in need, and helps build infrastructure to educate others about health and wellness. As a future medical professional, I hope to be able to serve communities in need of basic healthcare, just like ones in Cuzco, Peru. I would love the opportunity to do so in a country that needs the support more than anything!
