My name is Nathan Rabin and I quite literally (co)-wrote the book on "Weird Al" Yankovic when I collaborated with my childhood hero "Weird Al" Yankovic on 2012's Weird Al: the Book.
So when I found out Al would be releasing a career-spanning box set (Squeeze Box) I decided I'd continue my pioneering work in the field of "Weird Al" Yankovic studies with "The Weird Accordion to Al", a song-by-song analysis of every song Al has ever recorded for my website Nathan Rabin's Happy Place.
I just published the 110th entry in the column, which represents the most exhaustive body of "Weird Al" Yankovic criticism in contemporary history. It's already over 100,000 words long and should be substantially longer by the time it's through.
I'm planning on turning the column into a book when it's done, with lots of supplemental material covering other parts of Al's career, like his videos, movie and television show.
I'm also planning on following Al for part of his Ridiculously Self-Indulgent Vanity Tour from my old home town of Chicago to my new home town in Atlanta. This is where you come in, as I need a little scratch to do things the right way and not bankrupt my family in the process.
I would not enter into a GoFundMe campaign lightly. The reason I feel confident about this is because I genuinely feel like this is a once in a lifetime opportunity and because I feel like no one is better qualified to have this experience and write about it than me. That was the case when I used GoFundme to fund the week-long trip that became 7 Days in Ohio, my book about a week spent covering the Gathering and the Republican National Convention, and that's the case here.
To help fund this excellent adventure, I'm putting albums from my very own private Squeeze Box collection up for sale. These will be one-of-a-kind collectibles. Once an album is gone from this campaign, it is gone forever. I can personally vouch that stuff signed by both Al and me is rare, on account of I get asked to sign very little, understandably.
So this is an awesome opportunity to get some primo collectibles and help me realize my plans to cover Al and his unique upcoming tour in the biggest, most comprehensive way possible.
