My name is Meira Kowalski, and I am a rising junior at St. Petersburg High School in the International Baccalaureate Program. Since eighth grade, I have partnered with Joseph Deng, a practicing nurse in Tarpon Springs and a former Lost Boy of Sudan, to send over the counter medicine to the rural town of Panliet in South Sudan. After interviewing Joseph Deng for a documentary on the Lost Boys of Sudan (click here to watch this documentary), I was inspired to hold multiple medicine drives and raise money for his organization South Sudan Life Care Mission. This year, I am hoping to raise donations for Joseph to purchase over the counter medicine to save thousands of lives in South Sudan.
Over the past three years, I have been able to raise around 900 pounds of medicine as well as $8,350 in donations towards this cause. Last year alone, I raised around 600 pounds of medicine with the help of Terrace Community Middle School and other local donors. Also, I raised approximately $5,180 just last year from supporters such as yourselves. All of this medicine and these proceeds were used to save the lives of thousands of ill South Sudanese citizens last November when Joseph went to South Sudan. In third world countries such as South Sudan, one bottle of Imodium is able to save five lives.
This year, Joseph is heading to South Sudan in September. Although I am unable to hold medicine drives prior to his departure, I would still like to provide the funding for him to purchase over the counter medicine in Wau, Southern Sudan. Joseph will be using $3,000 of the total funds raised to purchase medicine in September. The other $2,000 will be used to pay for the shipment of the boxes at a later date, for I will be holding medicine drives throughout next school year to supply medicine for his trip in 2019. Any extra donations will contribute to the purchase of more medicine. Please help and donate to this cause so thousands of South Sudanese citizens get the medical attention they need to see another day. Thank you!
