My husband Dean is that guy. The one who works his you know what off to provide for his family 7 days a week, and overtime. He’s a father of four beautiful grown adults, step father to two, and grandfather to six. His family is very important to him, and so are his friends, who know that he is the guy to call whenever they need help, a job or anything in his power to do, he’s there for them. He’s also a wonderful husband who loves me deeply.
This man, father, papa, husband and hard workers life changed forever in August 2017, with a headache that grew to encompass his entire life.
Since then, he spends 24hrs a day lying flat in bed. Why? Because if he sits up or stands up, his headache pain jumps to ten. It is true when they say appreciate today, because your not guaranteed tomorrow, love people today, cause tomorrow they could be gone. I know, we are living that saying.
Dean has daily ringing in the ears, he’s lost 50 lbs off of his tall, already lean, formerly muscular frame. He has intermittent hearing loss, nausea & spontaneous vomiting. He suffers confusion, is dizzy, and he has lost all his former muscle, and is weak and tired all the time. He worries for his family more than himself, and besides bathroom breaks on his own, he needs help everyday just to live through another day.
It took six months of suffering, multiple ER, doctors and specialists visits and failed procedures here in Hawaii before the doctors here referred him to Stanford medical for treatment of spontaneous Intercranial hypotension, because they did not know how to treat this condition.
This disorder is caused by a cerebral spinal fluid leak. The brain floats in spinal fluid that flows in a sac around and down the spine. In Deans case, his leak is so severe that his brain is “slumping” from lack of fluid. The complications from this condition are varied and extremely serious. He is in danger of coma and then death due to being treated in an emergency situation where medical personnel here are not familiar with the condition and treat him in error.
Since this past Feb we have been to Stanford Medical for procedures and treatment to patch the leak without opening his spine (the last resort) once. As is the case with this condition, he may require several procedures before he gets symptom relief and the leak heals. But we have to be able to be at Stanford for that to happen.
His Dr is trying desperately to get him sent to Stanford for immediate treatment because Deans condition has deteriorated and just the plane ride alone is an excruciating experience. Time is not on our side. And it seems neither are the insurance people and the Stanford schedule. The insurance takes time to approve to pay for the trip, and the schedule is not flexible at Stanford for immediate care for this condition.
We want to return ASAP for hubbys life and well being. But we need your help. Please help us save my husbands life and his future. The longer he suffers, the more chance of permanent damage.
