MERCI'S MEDICAL TRANSITION

When I started medically transitioning, I told myself that I’d never ask for anything during this process; I wanted to have total control in physically shaping into the woman I felt like on the inside. Unfortunately, reality brings me to the exact place I said I wouldn’t be. 


For the past three years, I have had the privilege of being covered by insurance as a student at my four-year college. As a recent graduate, this coverage has ended. Thus, I am left with the costs of procedures that are essential to me living a healthy, mentally-stable life. For some time, my focus has been on surviving, but now, I want to do more than survive. I want to live and thrive to see the fruits of my labor, and the labor of my loved ones. 


With no insurance coverage, I must pay for monthly hormone replacement therapy, doctor visits and major procedures needed to affirm my gender. It is imperative, as a Black transgender woman, that I have the resources needed to navigate various career spaces and life more broadly.
