Medical support for Timbiqui, Colombia Resident

I first met Hader and his father Juvenal Cuero while serving as a Fulbright Fellow in Cali, Colombia in 2018-2019. Hader and his father invited me to Timbiqui to share their culture  and learn about the community. Timbiqui is a remote, rural Afro-Colombian community located in the department of Cauca, a region that has been hit hard by the Colombian conflict with the FARC. Timbiqui comprises 13 separate communities located along a river and it can take up to two hours to travel between the communities via motorboat and six hours to reach a city. You can read more about Timbiqui by clicking on the link to the article Hader and I co-authored that is included at the bottom of the page.

Hader's father had a stroke on November 18, 2019 while traveling along the Timbiqui River to tend to his small merchant business in the different communities. As it is far from a city with medical professionals, Hader's family had to pay for a air ambulance  to evacuate him to Cali for emergency treatment.

Juvenal is recovering, but he is confined to a wheelchair and is still struggling to speak. His wife and son, Hader, are taking care of him and have had to pay for a nurse to visit the home on daily basis. The responsibility of paying for the air evacuation and medical expenses has fallen on Hader, a full-time undergraduate student at the Universidad Cooperativa de Colombia. As you can imagine, it's taken a huge emotional toll and been a tremendous financial hit to the Cuero family as the main breadwinner is unable to work.

The idea of this campaign is to help relieve Hader and his family from the financial burden.

Plane: 5.300.000 COP ($1,507)

Hospitalization: 35.000.000 ($9,954)

Medicine: 1.000.000 ($284)

Diapers: 400.000 ($113)

Visiting Nurse: 1.680.000 ($477)

Total: USD$12,335

Just a dollar can go a long way in helping the Cuero family. In this holiday season, please consider giving this gift.

Translation: As the only son and the responsibility that comes with it, taking care of my father is very demanding, but my father has been a man that has fought every day provide the best life possible for his son.  Now the roles have changed, and it's my turn to help him until he manages to recover.

I would  be very grateful for your support for this good cause, it would be a great help. I wish you a merry christmas and God bless.
