I am grateful every day for my three healthy kids, a thriving career, and supportive family and friends. I founded MMK organization in 2011 due to the health disparity and lack of access in some communities in Kenya. MMK mobilizes volunteer doctors and nurses from all over the world to provide free health care and essential medications to remote and impoverished villages of Kenya and slums. After our first successful inaugural trip in 2011, I promised myself that I would continue giving back to these remote and impoverished communities with little or no access to basic health care services.
I would like to share this MMK youtube video that was sent to me by a 14 year old student Penh Alicandro, who won a school competition for social justice showcasing MMK's volunteer work.
LIFE IS WHY..Every trip, we encounter children and women that are on the verge of death. It makes us shudder to think of the outcomes if our team wasn't on the ground. Like this obviously dehydrated toddler we encountered who was unresponsive with very high fevers. The boy could not keep anything down and threw up all the medicines and fluids. His organs were quickly failing. We immediately started an IV and provided Intravenous Tylenol as well as Intravenous fluids. By the next day, the boy was responding to Malaria treatment and his vital signs had stabilzed.
And then there was this infant who must have been around 7 months old and was probably born under-weight and premature. He came to us very lethargic, warm and unresponsive. He had a severe eye infection and there was pus around his eye lashes. I rushed him to Dr Mark Sugi who quickly determined that the baby was just malnourished and had an eye infection. I tried to have the mom breast feed the baby but he was too lethargic to latch on the nipple. I felt so helpless.
Here is a baby that clearly could die due to lack of nutrition and it’s not like I could rush to the store and buy some formula. My baby was around the same age at the time and I was exclusively breastfeeding him. I had bought a can of formula in the event that the babysitter would run out of my breast milk while I was out on the mission. So I was thinking of this can of formula back in Nairobi which will probably not get used but this baby has nothing and is on the verge of death. Note to self; No more missions without infant formula. I wanted to take this baby back home with me and held him into my arms a little longer overwhelmed with emotion.
Chris the pharmacist immediately administered cipro ointment for the eye infection and then loaded the baby with infant vitamins syrups through a syringe and just let the vitamins slowly be absorbed. Then Chris suggested that I pump and donate my breast milk to the baby so when the mom said okay, I pumped furiously that night. The mom walked over a 100 miles with a baby latched on her back to come to our clinic the next day to get my breast milk.
And the wonders of medicine; the baby was now responsive and he could open his eyes. I was thrilled to give the mom my milk but most important, I encouraged her to eat well and continue breastfeeding her baby. I regularly check with the local clinicians and the the boy is still thriving.
There are many other stories like this with positive outcomes. And we are thankful for your prayers, support and financial assistance.

We have a great and brave team of 15 volunteers that will be in Kenya for an intensive 2 weeks. We invite you to be part of our mission by supporting us through your thoughts and prayers.
We also desperately need essential and life saving drugs for the trip and we need your financial donations to enable us to support those less fortunate than us.
