Life can be great when it goes according to plan. But life can slam you hard regardless of what plans you have. Like the rest of us, Chris Van Rheen, a high school classmate of mine, worked toward having a great life and a great retirement. But life has slammed him hard.
His wife, Joanne, was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy around 2004. By 2006 she was very ill and required lots of attention.
In 2009 Chris was diagnosed with diabetes. This was around the time of the mortgage industry shakeout, in which Chris worked as an underwriter. His knowledge and seniority (he had been in the business his entire adult life) allowed him to keep working only a few more years.
By 2012 Chris was out of work and Joanne needed round-the-clock attention. They could not afford their house anymore and moved into an apartment. Chris' diabetes progressed.
In December of 2014 Joanne passed away. Six days later, Chris had a heart attack and required bypass surgery.
His health continues to deteriorate. He has severe neuropathy (weakness, numbness and pain from nerve damage) in his hands, legs and feet. He must use a cane when he walks, and can only walk short distances. He is unable to do such simple things as going to the grocery store. And he has a small blockage in his carotid arteries causing small strokes.
Chris' life savings are gone. His only income is a monthly disability check, which doesn't begin to cover basic expenses. Now, Chris is being evicted from his apartment because he is unable to pay the rent.
