Hello, my name is Jacalyn. I'm hoping to raise some money for my friend, Doug Schmill, for a sand bed so he doesn’t have to go into a nursing home because he needs surgery to fix a wound. He would have to stay there from 1 to 2 months. There are monitory things when entering a nursing home too. They take away your benefits and give you $45 a month to live on.
I’m also Doug’s caregiver, I see him on a daily basis. I help Doug with his daily activities. I am his hands, and he is the brain… That's how I like to put it. Because he has no use with much of his body, from the neck down.
First, let me tell you a bit about Doug. He married the love of his life in 2004 after 3 years of their life in marriage, Doug was in a 4 wheeler accident while on a fishing trip in Canada that left him paralyzed (quadriplegic) from the neck down. Doug has such a positive outlook and passion for life, and loves fixing things...such as computers, chainsaws, lawn mowers, just about everything! He also has the greatest sense of humor, just a lovable guy! I might also add, he has been such an inspiration to me! I admire his wife Peggy who's been by his side every day, who has never given up on her husband... Now that's true love!
After Doug's accident nearly 10 years ago. Doug has been dealing with pressure ulcers, and for some that don't know, these are areas of skin that have been damaged by sustained pressure loss of circulation. Without blood circulation replenishing these areas, the affected skin tissue deteriorates, creating an open sore in its place. This has led to osteomyelitis which is an infection in the bone. With that being said, Doug could need surgery. Even without not having to have this surgery, it would still benefit him a great deal. Doug has been battling this for months now... (Certainly not his first rodeo!) Watching him and his wife go through this ordeal has been heart breaking for me! The bed that Doug is in need of to recover at home and help with these pressure sores is called a Sand Bed. This is meant to be used for patients with a severe pressure ulcer that is having difficulty healing. Generally, if a person has a pressure ulcer like this it means that they can't move on their own. The way we all do multiple times through the day and night.
The way the bed works is there is this very fine sand inside the mattress that gets blown around inside by air when the bed is "inflated." This is supposed to help heal the pressure ulcer. As this bed is very expensive. (Around $4,000.00)
