Medical Expenses Brendan Schoeneweis

On August 30th shortly after 5am, our 17 year old son Brendan, was on his way to work and was in a terrible car accident involving a driver who was found to be heavily under the influence of alcohol and illegal drugs. After a collision in the intersection, Brendan's car rolled multiple times and landed on its side pinning his arm underneath the car until two bystanders arrived who heard him yelling for help and were able to lift the car off of him. When my husband and I pulled up to the scene we were told by police and medics that he was lucky to have been alive. He suffered multiple injuries including a fractured spine, a fractured wrist, and lacerations on his head and side. The most significant and devastating injury for Brendan has been the loss of function in his right hand/forearm. Due to the weight of the vehicle on his arm for an unknown amount of time, he has suffered severe nerve damage in his Ulnar and Median nerves. We have had weekly appointments with specialists since the accident and he is seeing an occupational therapist twice a week. At this point there is no feeling and very minimal function with no sign of nerve regeneration. It will likely be 6 months to a year before we know if he will regain any function in his arm or hand and at this stage we are being told there is no known surgery or repair that can be done. He will require ongoing testing and medical care to monitor progress. If he regains some nerve function they may consider attempting a tendon transfer later down the road. We are remaining positive but there is a possibility that this is permanent damage.
The other driver did not make it. Our hearts hurt for their family. Let this be a reminder to us all that getting behind a wheel intoxicated is never worth your life or someone else’s.
It has been determined the other vehicle was uninsured. This leaves us with a lot of uncovered expenses and uncertainty in moving forward with Brendan’s needs. I know these are already financially challenging times for lots of families especially with the holidays around the corner but if you're able to contribute at this time, even the smallest amount is so appreciated. And for those who can’t please just send out prayers/positive thoughts to the families impacted by this tragedy.
