Our Little Lovie needs your help...
Lovie is a very sweet, loveable Sulphur Crested Cockatoo that was surrendered to the Haven originally in 2013. The person who surrendered him to us was not his owner so we got very little information about him. We very quickly found out that the one thing they told us about him was very true... his vocal abilities (or should I say screaming abilities) are exceptional. He has adopted out a couple of times but the noise was too much for the adoptive family. As you can see from the pictures, Lovie is also an overpreener. This has not changed in the entire time since he has been here... it's who he is. :)
Lovie has been very happy at the Haven. He is sweet and loveable. We love him dearly.
Recently we noticed that Lovie had a bit of respiratory "noise" on ocassion--- something that would be almost impossible to catch unless in a very quiet environment which of course we don't have often here. A vet visit and tests uncovered that Lovie has a respiratory infection. Antibiotics as well as nasal flushes (not something you want to have to do to an energetic Cockatoo I asure you) were administered for several weeks. After retesting, the first type of infection was gone but 3 more showed up. Our vet feels certain that there is something in his little head (tumor, growth, foreign object) that doesn't belong there and has requested that we do a CAT scan to try to reveal the cause of the infection.
We are coming to you- our supporters to ask once again for your help. The cost of the CAT scan is approximately 1000.00--- not a small chunk of change. However, it's what we do... it's who we are... giving a second, third or even fourth chance to a bird that needs our help. Remember- Lovie doesn't "act" sick. We are hoping that we have caught it soon enough to find out and fix the problem. Without the proper intervention he will only get worse.
