My in-laws planned for several years and while on their once in a lifetime trip to Italy my father-in-law, Ken, began having health issues. After seeking medical treatment and spending several days receiving a multitude of tests and scans, our worst fears were realized. Ken was diagnosed with a stage 4 malignant glioma in the frontal lobe of his brain. Bleeding from the tumor caused swelling in his brain, affecting his memory, speech and ability to recognize his wife Deb.
The prognosis for this type of brain cancer is grave and he is being kept indefinitely at the hospital in Rome for treatment to reduce the swelling and avoid slipping into a coma. The Italian doctors have informed Deb that travel is not possible until they have performed brain surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible. The surgery will likely happen in the next week depending on how stable he is over the next few days.
Deb is currently alone in Rome until her children are are to make travel arrangements to be with her. She and Ken will remain there for at least the next month until doctors release him to fly, at which point he will possibly require a team of doctors to escort him home. We all want nothing more than for Ken to be back home in Wisconsin to receive treatments and have the support of his loving family around him.
As you can imagine, this nightmare has also come with a huge financial burden. We are hoping to raise funds to help cover some of Ken's medical care and treatment while in Rome, to help pay for Deb's living expenses while she is there, and to get both of them back home to the states when it is safe for him to fly.
