My sister Alexandra, known to her family and friends as Zelene; is an outgoing, independent, adventurous spirit who has always appreciated what life has to offer and has taken every opportunity to experience it to the fullest. A road trip that started from San Diego to Arizona to witness the beauty of the Grand Canyon was interrupted by a traumatic accident.
On Oct. 19, 2019 our mother received a call in the early hours of the morning; a call that all parents fear… one of her youngest daughters and our little sister was involved in a vehicular accident and in critical condition. On this morning, my siblings and I awoke to learn that our little sister’s life had drastically changed.
The second youngest of 9, our Zelene suffered a multitude of injuries:
Bilateral pleural effusion
Pulmonary contusion
Left clavicle fracture
Brain hemorrhaging
C7-C4 spinous process fractures
T9-10 anterior sub clavicle fractures
And a spinal hematoma
She has shown such resilience and fortitude and we want her to still enjoy the same quality of life. In order to do this, our priority is to make her home accessible as possible. This calls for adding a ramp across the stairs, installing a lift to go up the house stairs, renovating her bathroom so it is wheelchair accessible, Our family is also asking for assistance in covering the ongoing list of medical costs in order to remove the financial burden that has already weighed so heavily.
