When we bought our house last October, we started feeding some stray cats in the alleyway to keep them away from the birds we loved watching in our new backyard. This really beautiful, lovable kitten started coming around in November. We started calling her Charlie Catlin due to her mustache, CC for short. We posted her photo on a local pet finder app and eventually found her former human and returned her home multiple times. We sent her human many links for nearby spay clinics because she was in heat.
CC would come by frequently, and we noticed that her tail was broken. That's around when her human stopped responding to our messages. Then CC eventually became pregnant and took permanent residence at the abandoned house next to us. We bought an outdoor cat house because we were worried about our two elderly inside cats.
She had 5 kittens, and CC's tail eventually fell off. We couldn't take her to the vet because we didn't want her to abandon her kittens.
Around the same time, a grey momma cat, who we now call Grey Kitty, started bringing her 4 feral kittens to our yard. And chaos ensued. We had 9 kittens, 2 mothers, and 2 sire male cats taking over our yard.
Our dogs were not happy that they had to give up their yard.
After calling and messaging every cat rescue we could, we realized how overwhelmed everyone is.
We recently found a trap on one of the community gifting groups and took matters into our own hands. After a week of trial and error, we eventually caught all 9 kittens and the 2 mothers who are now quarantining in my former craft room.
To make matters worse, one of our dogs had to go to the emergency vet. Sadly, he passed away the following day. Our family is still grieving our beloved Ollie Dog and recovering from the financial burden of cremation costs.
Local shelters are full, and the probability of the cats being euthanized is high. So the plan is to try to home the kittens and adopt CC and Grey Kitty despite not being ready to take on 2 more pets after losing our Ollie.
We recently took CC to our vet since her kittens are now weaned. She is FIV free, but she is in dire need of medical care. Our vet gave her some antibiotics. This cost us $211.
We also have an estimate of $392.95-$611.51 for CC's surgery. She will have to have the rest of her tail amputated, and we decided to go ahead and get her spayed, which her surgery is scheduled for on July 10th.
Grey Kitty is also scheduled to get her tests done so we can slowly introduce her to our 2 elderly cats and our Obi dog.
Luckily, we found homes for all 4 of Grey Kitty's feral kittens. My boyfriend's coworker took 1 kitten, and a dear friend offered to take the other 3 to her farm as long as we can get them spayed/neutered. This will cost us around $354, and the low-cost spay/neuter/shot clinic does not accept Care Credit.
The other 5 kittens will probably go to a shelter in the next week or so since they are more socialized and have a better chance of adoption.
We are looking at a total cost of about $1,176 just for CC's surgery and the remainder of Grey Kitty's kittens to be spayed/neutered so that they can go to their new home.
At this point, we have spent hundreds of dollars on food, cat litter, and flea medication every week on animals that were not ours due to the neglect of other people.
We are doing our best, but we are struggling financially in doing so. We'd appreciate any help.
