Care for Aux Cayes, Haiti !

Donation protected
Please help fund our efforts in southern Haiti to launch the first phase of a project that will provide health care and support to hundreds of Haitians who have no access to medical care.

In October of 2016, Hurricane Matthew swept fiercely through southern Haiti, and per the New York Times, damaged or destroyed 90% of the buildings in the city of Aux Cayes, leaving hundreds of people, already severely impoverished, in greater need than ever. More than one thousand people were killed as a result of the hurricane. A large portion of crops and farmlands were destroyed, contaminating the water supply and leaving a wreckage that will take many years to reverse.

Partners in Development ( PID), an established 501(c)3 non-profit organization with nearly 15 years of medical field experience in Haiti, sent response teams in November and again in January to address the needs of several populations in the Aux Cayes area. During a week long relief visit to the Aux Cayes area, PID learned that there was little or no medical access for those who lived in several areas surrounding Aux Cayes. PID ran mobile clinics at three different locations, seeing over 420 patients and providing care for all ages with conditions ranging from gastrointestinal illness to hypertension and diabetes.  The resulting strokes, heart disease, and the pain from both high blood pressure and diabetic neuropathy can render people unable to work. In an area already wracked by poverty and now hurricane damage, inability to work is worse than death. Most of the patients and their conditions are easily treated by medication and constant medical monitoring.

PID’s goal is to establish a sustainable and continuing program of healthcare and community empowerment in  the areas of Plaisance au Sud, Valeur and Tiverni. Specifically, our intent is to bring healthcare teams every two months, comprised of American volunteers and local Haitian healthcare workers, to address the needs of people suffering from hypertension and diabetes, empowering them to have the health and stability needed to work and help solve the immediate problems of their families and the future of this area.

Your donations will support medical care in these remote areas of southern Haiti by providing mobile clinics every two months, including consultation, assessment for primary care, education, diagnostic lab work, and medications, with plans for follow-up. Beyond the medical care that you will provide you will bring jobs to the community and hope that they will recover from the hurricane stronger and healthier than they have ever been.
