Medical Brigade Trip- Nicaragua

Hello everyone, my name is Kristen Brennan and I am currently a senior Biology major at Denison University. For those of you who know me, you know that I have been on the Pre-Med track pursuing a career as a physician over the course of my collegiate career. I just completed applying to medical school this summer and am excited to see where this journey finally takes me.
One thing that I have been looking to do during my time at Denison is volunteer my interests and efforts in a medical brigade abroad. I became aware of Global Brigades early on in my Denison career when a group of students went, but due to schedule constraints I was unable to attend. So, this year I decided that I was going to organize a medical brigade of my own. I am the Chapter President of the Ohio College Student’s Medical Brigade and have been working to recruit fellow students and fundraise for a trip to Nicaragua in January 2018.
Global Brigades is an international non-profit organization that empowers communities to meet their health and economic goals with their university volunteers and in-house teams. There are local teams in the regions that Global Brigades works with that serve to sustain the region and immerse volunteers in the medical and public health issues within that locality. Global Brigades is the largest, student-led, nonprofit health and sustainable development organization.
Our brigade will be stationed in Managua, Nicaragua for one week, January 13-20, treating all people free of charge in the clinic that we set up. In order to provide the best possible care and technology to our patients each brigader is asked to fundraise on top of the airfare and other related expenses. As a chapter we must fundraise a minimum of $1500 collectively which then directly goes towards sustaining the impact and health improvements in the area after our individual brigade leaves. Each brigader is responsible for raising $990 plus round trip airfare. The $990 goes towards our food, in-country transportation, security, medications, supplies, support staff, on-site physicians, and anything else needed to fully equip our brigade.
Any money raised by this GoFundMe account will be entirely used to help alleviate the expenses of this trip and to the people of Nicaragua. I am committed to donate any extra funds I raise that go beyond what I need for the trip to our Chapter’s $1,500 contribution, and after that to Global Brigades and their continuous efforts. I am trying to raise a majority of this money by December. Any donation no matter how small is greatly appreciated. I am beyond grateful for any donation or support that you may be able to provide. I am excited to be working with such an amazing group of students and for this opportunity. Please share with any family or friends who may feel compelled to donate to this cause!
