ARC medical and shelter supplies
What a couple of years it has been!
As our followers will know, we have been working flat out during the COVID pandemic and have faced many unforeseen challenges, not just with the virus taking its toll on staff and travellers to the area but also with the upkeep of the shelter itself and with a large amount of puppies and kittens being dumped at the shelter with no note or support.
Despite the challenges we have continued to provide food, shelter, vaccinations and general medical care for hundreds of animal, completed our annual monsoon feeding program, navigated centre repairs after severe cyclones, implemented our animal birth control programme and provided food parcels to migrant workers stuck in Goa during the pandemic.
In 2021 along with the usual cats, dogs and cows needing medical care, we have rescued a wild langur suffering with spinal damage from a road traffic incident. As the only shelter in the area, it is now vitally important our team have better equipment to help give the most effective treatment to all the animals who need our help.
Our Wishlist items for ARC:
Funding bucket for Medical supplies: Our Student programme which focuses on spay and neuter is dependant on a qualified Vet being on site and this excludes the medical care team needed for treating the endless dumped puppies, kittens and road traffic accident victims. With your help we can sponsor Veterinary teams to work with our shelter and have the medication they need at their finger tips.
Wheelchairs: We are currently the only shelter in the area to take in paralysed dogs. As of May 2022, we have over 10 disabled dogs and not enough wheelchairs to go around.
As we try to get these as custom made as possible, we will always need replacement parts or to increase to a larger size if the wheelchair is for a puppy.
Disabled dogs will usually spend their life at ARC as they are more challenging to adopt, so raising funds for their care is essential for their quality of life.
Shelter repairs: The weather damage to the shelter roofing and perimeter had to take a back sit during the pandemic but before we face another Monsoon season we must raise the money to make vital repairs as it is becoming unstable. Our animals safety is our priority.
X-ray machine £4000 / 411,370 INR / €4670: We have a lot of animals coming in with broken bones from a variety of causes such as road accidents, attacks from other animals and physical abuse from humans.
For each case, the animals must go into town to a private Veterinary Clinic for an X-ray. This incurs costs and extra stress for the animal. It also means a member of staff and the centre’s only rescue vehicle is unavailable for emergencies while we do this.
Blood testing lab £8000 / 822,740 INR / €9340: Similar to the X-ray machine, we have to go into town to test bloods. If we had our own lab we would be able to get results quicker and treat the animals more efficiently.
Freezer £200 / 20,500 INR / €233 - BOUGHT!
The shelter freezer stores the meat for the dogs dinner and with temperatures reaching over 40 degrees Celsius, we can’t be without it. Sadly our freezer is on its last legs and we really need a replacement.
