Summer 2020 update: We are still accepting donations, thank you for your support. Everything raised above $14,000 will go towards future Media Girlfriends scholarships.

Follow the updates below for the latest news on the scholarship.

--

To support the future of diversity and inclusion in Canadian media, Media Girlfriends is starting a scholarship for young women* looking to study journalism, communications, media, or tech.

Media can seem like an exclusive world. We aim to change that.

This new scholarship exists to encourage and support young women to study a major related to media, with a career in journalism or storytelling in mind.

Upon acceptance to a university or college program, the recipient will receive this award. They will also have the opportunity to meet with members of the Media Girlfriends network. Our original goal for our inaugural year was to raise enough money for two $1,000 scholarships. Thanks to early interest and support, we have a new larger goal of $10,000 (for two or more scholarships).

As a contributor, we'll keep you posted on the scholarship launch in early 2020, as well as provide updates throughout the process, and letters from the winners. We believe Canada's media is stronger with a diversity of women's voices. Thanks for supporting this vision.

About:
Media Girlfriends started in 2016, as a podcast created by Nana aba Duncan. The hashtag #MediaGirlfriends has grown to include peer mentorship on social media and in real life, including events. The Media Girlfriends core team includes: Garvia Bailey, Nana aba Duncan, Rachel Giese, Jennifer Hollett, Nam Kiwanuka, Reshmi Nair, and Hannah Sung.

The scholarship will launch on February 1, 2020. Jennifer Hollett is administrating the scholarship. She will hold the funds in a bank account until the cheques are issued to the scholarship winners in June 2020. We will provide updates on any transactions involving the funds (eg. printing and framing certificates, etc) through GoFundMe updates. Thanks again for your support.

* We use an inclusive definition of women, which includes trans women, genderqueer and non-binary folks.
