Emergency care for Medalla Loca

Donation protected
If you know Jake Brown, you know his best friend, his rock, his service dog and constant companion, Medalla Loca (“Meme”). If you live on Culebra, you know and love Meme. Even if you have only visited Culebra, there’s a good chance that you too, have had your heart touched by this one of a kind Sata. Anyone that knows Jake and Meme, knows the indescribable and unbreakable bond that they share. She has given so much joy and love to us, and to so many.

Tuesday morning, Jake and I rushed our sweet girl to the Animal Emergency and Specialty Care Hospital in Portland, when she began having some oral bleeding and pretty severe digestive issues. She was diagnosed with Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP) and tested positive for Lyme disease, Ehrlichia and Anaplasmosis (the apparent cause of the ITP). Blood tests showed she had one platelet (normal is 200,000) and a very low red blood cell count.

She has been fighting for her life in emergency care for four days now.  Her RBC dropped further the first night, then stayed the same for two days and we hoped the worst had passed. Even though she was still not making platelets, we were hopeful that she had reached her lowest RBC levels and that the numbers would start to improve with one more day. But today did not bring the news we were hoping for. She is still not making platelets, her RBC has dropped again and she is likely to need a blood transfusion within the next 24 hours.

We are so very grateful for all of the prayers, the outpouring of love and words of support that we have been receiving from our friends, family and of course, our very special island family. We are also very grateful for the outstanding care that she is getting here in Maine, and the tenderness with which it has been delivered; both to Meme and to us.

The unfortunate side of this amazing care, is the price tag. We are already looking at a $5,000 debt, and every additional day in the hospital will see that number rise rapidly. This special girl deserves the best care possible, giving her the best chance at pulling through this. We will be profoundly and forever grateful for any help in covering the mounting debt we are incurring, trying to give her that chance. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Love and Bless.
