MCM for GW Cancer Center

Donation protected
Hi Everyone,

Katy, Grace and I are running the Marine Corps Marathon for the GW Cancer Center. As part of the fundraing team, we have a total fundraising goal of $2000. We welcome any and all donations and are happy to answer any questions anyone may have.

We met through the Women's Running Club in our first weeks at Notre Dame and became fast friends and running partners. This will be our 3rd full marathon we are participating in together. We have never run for a charity before, so below is a brief synopsis of what impacted each of our decisions.

From Megan:
I' m a medical student at GW and am  excited about running for the GW Cancer Center, not because it's the biggest cancer center in the country but because a large chunk of their work is dedicated to those who cannot afford high quality healthcare becauses they are either uninsured, poorly insured, or do not have an adequate social support system. As many of you know, my beautiful and perfect father was diagnosed with a rare form of gastric cancer last April. He sadly passed away this February. We had health insurance through the University of Notre Dame and still had to fight insurance battles every step of the way. My mom is a physician and had some insight into the system, but we were utterly shocked  and disappointed at how taxing the bureacratic side of fighting cancer could be. I can't imagine what it would be like without quality healthcare coverage and an additional full-time staff person (my mom) to manage everything.

From Grace:
Running has brought each of us so much - community, sanity, thinking time, peace, joy, and even heartache. In the face of setbacks or tough training runs, I try to shift my perspective to be one of gratitude for all of the miles I have logged...for the health of my body...for the freedom to explore our beautiful world by foot...for friends who love this sport as much as I do! This marathon is all about running for those who cannot. I am running for the ever-smiling Mr. Fuerst (who met us at the finish of our first marathon!), all those fighting cancer, and our nation's military men and women, especially my brother, AF Capt Dr. Jack Carroll.

From Katy:
Like Megan, I'm also a medical student (at Vanderbilt, not GW), and I was excited to hear about all the outreach work that the GW Cancer Center does! My career goal is to be a primary care provider for uninsured/underinsured patients, and an important piece of primary care is cancer screening for patients. However, a challenge of working with these patients is coordinating specialty care, as the goal of medicine is not only to diagnose, but to heal when possible. DC is lucky to have the GW Cancer Center to give patients a place to turn, a place for high-quality care for patients from all walks of life, when a life-changing cancer diagnosis comes around. I'm excited to support them in this mission through running the MCM this fall! (And, of course, I'm always excited for another opportunity to run with these two inspiring ladies!)

We thank you in advance!
