McConnell's Disaster Help

Donation protected
Bob & Nerisa McConnell are flood victims of Hurricane Harvey, Their home of 42 years was inundated with 5 feet of sewage contaminated water.

Clean up started with the help of friends and family who totally gutted the first floor of their home. Virtually everything on the first floor, in the garage and two automobiles were lost. You can view photographs of the damage on Facebook. (Click Link)

It is truly ironic that Bob & Nerisa, now in their mid-70s, should need financial help. But they do.

My name is Carl Highland. I’m retired and live near Roslyn, Washington. I'm writing this request for help.  I've known the McConnell’s since we were teenagers. Bob was a college classmate at Washington State University. While Bob and I were at WSU, Nerisa was studying to become a Registered Nurse in Spokane, WA. A week after college graduation, Bob served as my best man.

The McConnell’s are truly two of the nicest, most caring and generous people I know. They have always put their children, people in need and their community ahead of themselves.

Never wealthy, the McConnell’s made giving a major part of their lives. This included establishing a significant scholarship fund at Washington State University. Typical of their humility, they didn't establish the scholarship in their name. They established it in the name of one of Bob's (and my) distinguished professors; Robert A. Mott.  They also made a significant contribution in time and money to rebuild their local Lutheran Church. I could go on much longer about the McConnell's generosity, but that would take a lot of space.

After a very fulfilling life, the McConnell’s now live conservatively on a modest retirement income.

By the time their home and auto insurance proceeds are paid to them, Bob and Nerisa are going to be  $150,000 short of the actual clean up and rebuilding costs. This is due in great part to the toxic cleanup and bringing their plumbing and electrical systems up to current building codes.

Bob and Nerisa must also replace two older automobiles for which they will receive little insurance payout.

The McConnell's ability to borrow and repay what they will be short is beyond their current means as they are still paying off a refinance mortgage taken out in 1999 to remodel their home.

I'm hoping you can help with a contribution to their need. Their need is immediate as they go through the clean up process and try to get back on their feet.

For those of you that may not have followed Bob and Nerisa since they left Warden WA after high school to further their education, Bob graduated from Washington State University with a degree in Communications in 1962. He was also an Air Force ROTC student and received his commission at graduation. He then served 4 years as a Captain in the Air Force serving in Thailand during the Vietnam War. He was a photographic officer in the 363 RTS which processed, printed and interpreted aerial reconnaissance photos.  After leaving the service, Bob and Nerisa settled in Houston, TX where Bob went on to spend 30 years at Exxon in Marketing, Production and Human Resources.

The McConnell’s will be truly greatful for your help.
