Shirley Ann McConnell Barner was transplanted a heart on November 10, 2012. After fighting a battle of the aftermath of a heart attack, Shirley and her family were overjoyed with the chance of continued life and a fresh start.
We never foresaw what was to come. Due to difficulties after being transplanted, Shirley continued to experience a magnitude of health issues. Due to infection in her transplanted heart, Shirley's body began working against her. What started as muscle weakness, eventually led to much uncertainty on what her actual diagnosis was.
As of Monday, Shirley was officially diagnosed with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
Because of such a late diagnosis, it is believed that Shirley was in the LATE stages of ALS. Due to the inability to establish a viable life insurance policy due to her health issues, our family is asking for help. We are a proud family who don't believe in handouts, however when it comes to the pillar and strength of our mother, sister and aunt, we aren't too proud. We NEED to dignify Shirley. Please help us send our dearest Shirley home to glory. Any and all contributions will be much appreciated.
