McAbee Fight Against Cancer

Many of you know Hansel and Kim and are familiar with their story. For those who don't, we are
sharing it here.
Hansel was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in December 2010. His original diagnosis was
stage 3A, with a highly aggressive version of prostate cancer.   After several months of miraculously successful radiation treatment, Hansel’s cancer markers
were undetectable. He was in remission and Hansel and Kim were excited to move on with their lives.
Part of moving forward was starting a family. Before Hansel was diagnosed with prostate
cancer, he and Kim went through several months of unsuccessful fertility treatments. They
decided to consider adoption and were beginning to pursue that option before they discovered
Hansel had cancer. When they heard the word cancer from the doctor, they thought their
dream of having a family was lost.  But God had a different plan.
A pastor at their church told them that he
knew of three girls, Samarah (age 9), Briannah (age 7), and Eleah ( age 4) who were in foster
care and needed a forever home. These siblings had been in foster care for over two years, and
there was growing concern about whether or not they could be placed together.  When asked if
he was interested, Hansel immediately said," yes!" During this time, the McAbee's began the long process to become foster parents. Shortly after, they were able to develop a relationship with the
current foster family, and they got to know and fell in love with the girls. On December 21, 2012,
the girls moved into Hansel and Kim’s home as foster children, and on June 21, 2013, their
adoption was finalized. The dream of having a family was realized for Hansel, Kim, and three
precious girls.
Over the past five years, there have been a few bumps in the road with Hansel’s cancer. In
March of 2015, bone scans revealed for the first time that cancer had metastasized and he began chemotherapy.   As it became
apparent that the chemotherapy treatment was only slowing the progression of his disease,
doctors searched for other treatments. Part of this search was genetic testing, which showed
positive indicators making him a candidate for targeted therapy.  When targeted therapy did not
work, doctors turned back to stronger chemotherapy in November 2016 and eventually in
February of 2017 to immunotherapy. Unfortunately, tests have now revealed that the
immunotherapy is not working as they hoped.
As their fight against cancer continues, Hansel, Kim, and their girls steadily to pray for a miracle for healing to extend his life with his wife and kids, so they ask that you join them in that prayer. You can also be a

 Due to this increasingly progressive disease, it has caused Hansel to have to stop working and has had Kim in a struggle between maintaining a full-time job with limited days off and being at home with her ailing husband.
The funds raised here will be used by the McAbees  pay medical bills and travel, as well as
to pay for treatment related expenses such as home modifications and in home care services.
