I was diagnosed with Alpha-1 Antitrypsin in January of 2014. This affects my liver and has caused me to develop cirrhosis.
This is not the result of alcohol. This is a genetic birth defect that is heradatory and there was no way to prevent it.
It is estimated that 1 out of every 2,500 people will get some version of this every year but only 12-15% of those will have it effect the liver.
At this time there is no medicine or any type of treatments for this and a complete liver transplant is the only alternative.
MELD (Model for End-Stage Liver Disease) is the rating system they use to determine how good or poor your liver is. A normal liver rates a 6 and 40 is the worst. When the MELD reaches 15, that is when a transplant becomes the option. My MELD score as of right now is a 16.
Over the past 9 months I have undergone a battery of tests to make sure I have no infections, do not have any form of hepititis, or tuberculosis. I have had 2 stints in the hospital due to side effects of my condition and had everything from my heart to kidneys checked to make sure the I can endure the 6 -12 hour surgery involved.
When the call comes for a transplant, I will undergo surgery at the Medical University of South Carolina after which I will spend 5-7 days in the hospital depending on my condition. I will then need to be relocated from my home in Myrtle Beach, SC to Charleston, SC for 3 weeks to 3 months because I will need to be within 20 minutes of the hospital at all times.
After surgery I will have over a dozen prescriptions I will have to take for a month then drop down to 1-2 by the end of the 2nd month that I will have to take the rest of my life.
I am asking for help with a startup fund to help me on the road to successful transplant. I was officially given the green light to be put on the waiting list for liver donation as of 2/12/15.
Now begins a nervous waiting game and the knowledge of massive changes to my life. I want to be there for my 15 year old son. I am a single father and have so much more to show him, guide him and experience with him in life.
Your donation would go a long way to helping with the hotel stay in Charleston, medications and general day-to-day needs. The extensive medical bills will be another issue but that is farther down the line.
