Relief for Housing Scam Victims

Two of my good friends, a young recently-married couple, are self-published authors who recently took a risk to move across the country from their home in Newfoundland to London, Ontario. On arrival, they found their new house completely unlivable—doors hanging crooked, rotting floorboards, exposed wiring, crumbling walling, and ruined windows. Their landlord has refused to refund their substantial deposit. As of now, they are beginning legal procedings with a very kind lawyer who has agreed that this is a clear case of housing fraud. Meanwhile, they are planning to move back to their Newfoundland home.

My friends, Mark and Becca, have sold the majority of their possessions for the move, and between travel expenditures and impromptu expenses from having to find last-minute boarding in London, this whole experience has been a huge hit to both their savings and their livelihoods (time lost is writing lost, for authors). Even if they get their deposit of over $1,000 back, this con has hit them hard.

I don't know whether they will be able to stay in London like they planned, but if any kind Londoners would be willing to donate to a small relief package for them, all of us would be extraordinarily grateful for any and all help! All of the donations will go directly to Mark and Becca. I've known them for over five years and worked as their editor for nearly two, and I'd be personally indebted to you for anything at all to help out two of my best friends and overall great people!
