On Monday, May 15, 2017 while vacationing in Mexico, Mary Catherine lost some mobility in her arms and legs. After treatment for what was thought to be a migraine and dehydration, they were able to get her home to Maryland. The next morning she lost all mobility, and over the next few weeks became progressively worse, losing her eyesight as well.
After several weeks of testing, treatment, and hospitalization, on Tuesday, June 6 it was discovered that she had a build-up of cerebrospinal fluid that was causing pressure on her brain and eliciting the paralysis, loss of sight and excruciating pain. The next morning our beloved "MC" had brain surgery to insert a "shiny new shunt" (her words) and remove an old, inactive shunt from her childhood that was thought to be no longer needed.
Throughout this entire ordeal, she has remained our optimistic, determined MC, cracking jokes with the doctors and nurses even as she underwent procedures such as a lumbar puncture. They have all come to love her as much as we do.
