MC Balmer help him beat leukemia

Donation protected
Who I am:  McCaul Balmer
Where I am from:  Prince Rupert, BC, Canada
Where I am being treated: Vancouver General Hospital Leukemia and Bone Marrow Transplant Ward
Who is the beneficiary:  McCaul Balmer
Asking support for:  Living expenses for 3 months to a year.  We live in Prince Rupert but will be required to rent a place in Vancouver because the out patient and post treatment for Leukemia requires us to be at the hospital minimum 3 days a week

FROM MY WIFE: This is Nicole and MC is the love of my life.  He is recovering from his first round of chemotherapy.  As I sit at his bedside, I recall a favorite memory of him, hurling a giant cedar log down a mountain because it made him trip and stumble.  I am counting on that same strength to beat Leukemia.

FROM MC:
On December 19, 2017 my wife Nicole came home from work with an urgent message that my doctor was trying to contact me. I was standing 30 feet above ground, in the middle of a roofing project when something told me that this phone call was about to change my life––and it did. I was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a blood disorder with a white blood cell mutation that interrupts the bone marrow’s ability to produce healthy white blood cells, red blood cells and platelets. The early symptoms can include shortness of breath, lingering colds, or cuts that don’t heal properly. I had none of these symptoms yet, therefore the diagnosis came as a complete shock.  It was an overwhelming feeling of unknown, accompanied first by thoughts of my wife, and how this would hurt her and, “How can this happen? I had so many dreams yet to fulfill”.

I had recently applied for my dream job at the Prince Rupert Coast Guard. I never would have guessed that the routine physical exam associated with the application process might save my life because it prompted a blood test––which led to my early diagnosis of Leukemia.

HOW I DESCRIBE MY HUSBAND:
Until now, his life has been full of big mountains, epic adventures, and living in remote towns with his wife, their dogs Chewy and Smokey, and Missy a barn cat that adopted them. He has loved every community they lived in, from Vancouver to Prince Rupert, and the Yukon. He is an energetic personality, often giving back by volunteering in the community. He trained to serve as Firefighter Relief, Ambulance Attendant, and now in Prince Rupert, he has joined the Prince Rupert Ground Search And Rescue team. The Ground Search and Rescue team fulfills the part of him that loves to connect with nature and likeminded people.  He loves the work he does in Carpentry and learning new things.  He is a BIG personality and when in a room he is really with you and interested in everything that you do.  Please help him continue to show up for the people in his life, by helping him beat Leukemia.

TREATMENT IN VANCOUVER: He is currently being treated at the Vancouver General Hospital. It’s the best Bone Marrow Treatment facility in BC, possibly in Canada. We are grateful for Dr. Hogge and her research on this complex blood disorder. She has won the Vancouver General Hospital international recognition.

WHAT WE ARE ASKING FOR: His treatment schedule will depend on how his body responds. And not all the costs associated with the treatment will be covered by Healthcare. Leukemia has many variables with phased treatment, which can take from 3 months, to a year. He will only be covered partially for the prescriptions needed. They will be renting an apartment near the hospital while he is treated, and his wife is required to fly between Vancouver and Prince Rupert to take care of their affairs. All this comes at a cost that requires them to be away from home, near to the hospital for post treatment, as well as for procedures, medications, airline flights…all expenses one just couldn’t prepare for.

It’s not easy asking for help. But here we are, asking for your help––including prayer; looking after our home and pets while away; and help with offsetting costs while we deal with the treatment in Vancouver. Our goal is to raise money to help offset costs in the immediate and foreseeable future.

THANK YOU FROM MC:
I will fulfill those dreams ......   #MCBEARDSTRONG

A special thanks to #armyagainstleukemia, which includes a list of family and friends that reached out to help us deal with this chaos.

THANK YOU FROM NICOLE: It is heartwarming to see so much love pour out from those that are reaching out to us.  Thank you to friends and family and those that are caring for our Pets while we are away.  We remain positive and I hope this brings you some comfort that we remain steadfast in Faith and determination.
