Afghan Interpreter Visa Fund

Donation protected
Shabir M served as an interpreter with the Marine Corps for 23 months. He participated in multiple combat operations and route clearance patrols in Helmand Province Afghanistan, including the volatile Sangin valley. During this time he was exposed to severe threats from the enemy attempting to engage coalition forces. Shabir himself has been struck by ten IEDs and two suicide bombers. He was subject to the same threat of small arms fire and violence as the U.S. Marines working with him. Shabir enabled Marines to connect with the local populace, ensuring mission accomplishment and mitigating risk to Marines and the civilian population. While Marines cycled home, Shabir continued his service to his country and ours. He did this for the bloodiest two years of the war in one of the most dangerous districts.

Since leaving employment with the Marine Corps, Shabir has been under constant threat at home. He is forced to live a covert lifestyle for fear of being discovered as a coalition ally. Since the pull-back of American forces, many areas of Afghanistan have come under Taliban shadow governments. The Taliban is known for kidnapping, torturing, and beheading anyone who has cooperated with the United States. Shabir is under constant threat.

Interpreters for the U.S. government were promised Special Immigrant Visas (SIV) after a year of service. Shabir filed for his SIV in 2012. His case has been stuck in administrative processing where it has been delayed indefinitely. Shabir followed through on his required paperwork and interviews but the Department of State is letting these applications go un-adjudicated.

The brotherhood formed during war is a very special and unique bond. I feel this same bond with Shabir and have been working with him on his SIV since 2012. Congressmen have been contacted, attorneys were hired and journalists were contacted with no effect. Shabir has been abandoned by our country and Afghans like him have died horrible deaths while waiting for help that will never come. It is a shameful way to treat those that suffered and sacrificed for our troops.

All proceeds from this campaign will go to support Shabir's current living expenses and attorney costs associated with his repatriation.
