The Otzi on Mt. Whitney Project

A Dream in the works. A dream not only for my own intentions but to document and share it with as many people as possible. I want it to be an adventure and a learning experience for all.

Years ago, I came up with something I would like to do when I turn 50 in 2015. I intend to climb Mount Whitney the year of my 50th birthday in Otzi the Iceman styled gear.

I will make most of the equipment/clothing and build in essential safety and assemble a small team. I have contacted a few people that would have interest in joining the climb, as well as others interested in documenting it. This would hopefully happen in the spring to beat the crowds if we can get the permits needed.

The gear will be kept as authentic as possible but not ignore safety. Food will be traditional as possible as well as the carry methods but again I will have a “life boat” plan. It will not be an exact reenactment but I will keep it as true to the time as possible and use what I have as far as materials.

I have climbed the mountain twice in the past, this will be the third. Once with friends and the second as a guide with two SERE Specialists as a continuation training.

Whitney is not the most technical mountain but it is a place dear to my heart and being the highest point in the contiguous USA it is not to be scoffed at.

This will be a less rushed attempt taking advantage of several camps on the way up. As always there may be a point where it is abandoned, but that’s how it works.

It will be done in all respects to the man who lost his life so many years ago and other than that there is no real reason other than submersing in the adventure of a time long past.

I have made and am making most of the equipment needed but I am in the process of acquiring furs and other pieces which for the most part will need to be purchased. Unfortunately my budget is minimal at this point. The travel budget is also something I could use a hand with as it obviously will be a large expense.

This is why I would like to get help with the funding, anything offered would be greatly appreciated and help me towards my goal of completing this climb. I also assure you if this climb is not made a great adventure of some sort will come out of this and of course be well documented.

Thank you!
