For most, SSR and the Accelerated Reader program offers the only time during their day that they will sit and read a book of their choice independently. Through books like "The Hunger Games," "The Boy in the Striped Pajamas," "Maze Runners," and "Eragon," my students have traveled to other worlds, had their hearts broken, risen to fight for injustice, and learned valuable lessons about love, relationships, life choices, and the challenges of growing up.
Accelerated Reader not only opens these doors to the imagination for them, but it also helps to increase students' reading achievement. In the past ten years in which we have incorporated the Accelerated Reader program into our English language arts curriculum we have seen our school's API score jump 216 points from 647 to an amazing 863, in part due to the independent reading they are doing through Accelerated Reader. According to "The Nation's Report Card: Trends in Academic Progress 2012" students who are given the opportunity to read for fun find greater success than those who do not. The report states, "At all ages, students who reported reading for fun almost daily or once or twice a week scored higher than did students who reported reading for fun a few times a year or less." Our subscription for Accelerated Reader costs 5,800 dollars annually.
Our PTSA can only afford to donate one thousand dollars for us to try to continue this key instructional tool. Through Gofundme I hope to fundraise 5,000 dollars to help us keep this program for at least the next year and to continue to help support the academic success of my more than deserving students.
