Want to join me in making a difference? This year I have decided to support the YMCA Wellington and District as part of my Mayor's Charity Appeal 2019/20.
YMCA Wellington and District was founded in 1859 and is an independent Christian charity committed to helping young people particularly at times of hardship and need, regardless of gender, race, ability and faith and form part of the national and international YMCA Movement.
From 1920 until the early 1990’s, YMCA were based at Wrekin Buildings in Tan Bank in the centre of Wellington. From there they provided a substantial range of leisure and social facilities for the people of Wellington.
However in the early 1990s the board identified an unmet need amongst local young homeless single people and developed a new strategy to address this. Since then, providing supported accommodation for young, homeless single people has become a core activity. The YMCA sold part of Wrekin Buildings and moved to Consort House in Victoria Avenue in 1994. This is owned by YMCA England and managed by Wellington and District.
YMCA provides support to the people of the Borough of Telford and Wrekin through a variety of services:-
Supported Accomodation for 16-25 year olds
Floating Support through the Thrive Floating Support Service
The Holly Project - peer led CSE survivor service
The Freedom Programme - Domestic abuse information programme for women
Their goal is to provide young people with the support and opportunities they need to become valuable, responsible members of the community. The YMCA support team works hard to encourage and motivate residents to develop their personal skills and to improve their financial situation through education and training.
So please dig deep for this very worthy cause - every little penny does really make a difference to these individual lives!
