Maya's Transition Fund

Hello - my name is Mayari. I’m a 24-year-old neurodiverse Black + Filipina trans woman seeking assistance with covering the costs of transition care. I’ve been on this journey for five years now and I haven’t been able to consistently provide myself with the resources I need to live a complete life.

For most of my life I’ve struggled with moderate to severe executive dysfunction and anxiety, which have only been exacerbated by being furloughed from my job with the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic. In the past I’ve sought mutual aid in times of crisis but in this instance I’ve been too encumbered to express my own needs while so many are living through the same crisis. But the harsh reality is that to be Black and trans in this world is a crisis in itself. The pandemic magnifies the injustices we suffer, compounding crises.

I’ve resumed going to work amidst due concerns about covid-19 because I simply cannot opt to have no income, but the only work I can secure (“secure” is a generous word) is in the service industry where I’ve never been able to earn a truly livable wage. Transmisogynoir has proven to be an obstacle in many professional environments where I’ve experienced discrimination and harassment. My experience runs the gamut from being consistently passed over for raises/promotion, to being sexually harassed by a supervisor then retaliated against and forced into resigning from the job I had for three years, which at the time provided me with some healthcare benefits.

The funds raised here will be put towards the cost of hormone replacement therapy, laser hair removal, reconstructive surgery, and counseling/medication management. All of these are imperative for my quality of life and my health and safety. Being continuously traumatized by transmisogynistic and racialized violence have left me with an immobilizing fear to self-actualize and a quotidian despair about the future. Living like this is unsustainable. Please, consider contributing to my struggle for survival. Disenfranchised people require the support of community to thrive.

Healthcare should not be a commodity. Support Black trans women while we are alive.
