Help Maya's Music Be Heard!

Donation protected
Hello, world!

My name is Maya Miro Johnson.  I am a 17-year-old aspiring conductor-composer in the field of classical and contemporary music, and I need your support on my journey!

I believe this art form is incredibly important because live concert music truly has the capability to transform people, places, ideas, and moments.  Composers and conductors harness and celebrate this artistic power by becoming collaborators in a global dialogue- an amazing profession!  Sadly, women have been severely excluded from the field for almost its entire existence.  It is very important to diversify an art form which is inherently universal.

I have been experiencing a certain measure of success at a young age (see bio - please click!).  But studying and practicing this art form at a high level not only entails much dedication and hard work but a great deal of expense.  Continually increasing costs have met the limits of my family’s financial circumstance.  I and my parents (with my mother as "beneficiary" because I'm under 18) have launched this campaign to ensure that I will receive the education I need to pursue my life’s work.

What could possibly be so costly about classical music?  Well, let me tell you!

* Scores and sheet music (up to $150 per score)
* Weekly lessons (averaging $6000 a year)
* Travel (to out-of-state workshops, performances of my work, auditions, and interviews)
* Instrument purchase, repair, and maintenance (such as bow re-hairs, new strings, conductor’s baton), and protective cases
* A yearly subscription to Sibelius music composition software and the computer on which it runs
* Application fees (for competitions, awards, and post-secondary programs)
* Concert tickets
* Accompanist fees
* Venue rental for performances
* Freelance musician compensation to play my work
* Tuition to labs, institutes, and summer programs (this summer alone will cost more than $7000 in tuition and travel expenses)

I have been accepted to the 2018 Boston University Tanglewood Institute (a prestigious summer training program associated with the Boston Symphony Orchestra  and the Tanglewood Music Festival)!  When I received my acceptance notice, I was simultaneously elated and worried, because I knew that we wouldn’t be able to afford it, even with a partial scholarship!  Tuition pays for the opportunity to:

* have six new pieces, including an orchestral work, played and recorded
* meet and observe world-renowned conductors, soloists, and composers
* gain six hours of transferable college credit
* study vigorously under program directors Martin Amlin  and Justin Casinghino

This is a major opportunity for a girl from the Mountain West!

I know life costs money.  Everyone has to deal with this.  But please don’t let my voice be silenced by my lack of funds.  I have a lot to say; the world does need more female voices, after all.  Can you help me realize my dream of sharing beautiful, complex, cathartic, expressive music with the world?

If you can’t contribute right now, no problem- please share on social media instead!

Thank you for your time and consideration!

Eternally grateful,
Maya
