Tropical Storm Eta is currently causing devastation in Guatemala. The communities of Cotzal are in current need of funds to deal with the aftermath of this storm, as it is causing damages to houses, crops, and health. One community has been flooded by the rain, and others negatively impacted. The municipality has been without electricity for the last three days. This is on top of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is furthering the precarity of life.
Any amount will help! Funds will be distributed to community leaders who are working to collect mutual aid (food, etc.). Please message me if you have any questions or concerns.
There are over 30,000 people living in Cotzal of which 83.9% lived in poverty; and only ten communities had access to electricity.8 In Cotzal, the majority of people are agricultural workers who earn between 30–35 quetzals a day. Cotzal was heavily hit during the Guatemalan civil war witnessed the deaths of 200,000 people, 83% of which were indigenous. According to a United Nations truth commission, the Ixil Region (consisted of Chajul, Cotzal and Nebaj) was one of hardest hit areas during the war, and suffered 114 of the 626 reported massacres committed by the military.
