Mauritania Market Place

Garly, Mauritania. You may have never heard of Garly, which is a village of about 2500 people on the border of Mauritania and Senegal. You may have also never heard of Mauritania- a country in west Africa. And that is okay! You don't need to know of Garly or Mauritania to care about the people there.

Laura served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Garly from 2006-2008. The two years she spent there were life-changing for her and she thinks of it often. In collaboration with the village, Laura is spearheading a market place for the hardworking people of the village. 

There have been many amazing projects completed in Garly including running water, solar power, and latrines. Creating a shady spot for the daily market will improve the daily lives of the farmers, cooks, and entrepreneurs living in Garly. 

What will your donation do?

It will make the daily market experience more comfortable for the villagers. Temperatures can reach 130F in the summer. Shade and a cool concrete floor make scorching weather bearable. 

It will also serve to improve the shopping experience of those looking for goods. This may spur on the local economy and help villagers support themselves rather than rely on family members working in distant cities.

Specifically, your donation will purchase building materials and pay for an engineer/architect. Supplies such as cement, PCV pipe, and rebar. Villagers will carry water and sand to the building site to create bricks and contribute their time to the project. The budget below details prices. We are aiming for $5000 for now!
