Brain Injury Awareness

I was involved in a serious auto accident in 1991, when my friend who was driving while intoxicated, drove off a bridge  landing 30 feet below in a rocky ravine.  I was rushed to the hospital where the doctors informed my family that I only had a 5% chance of survival.  I had a closed head injury which included swelling of the brain, global hemorrhaging on the left frontal, temporal, parietal lobes  with basal skull fracture. The right side of my brain had hemorrhaging of my thalamus and damages to my occipital lobe.  I was in a coma for months and when I awoke,  my entire life had changed.  I have dedicated my life to helping those who have been in a coma or are currently in coma or have any other disability.  I often speak to the kids at the California Youth Services.  I also speak to juveniles who have been placed on house arrest or are on probation.  I warn them about the dangers of driving while intoxicated and how their lives can forever be changed by one bad decision.  I give talks at nursing schools to teach their students about "coma therapy".  I go with them to trauma units as part of their internships and instruct them from the point of view of someone who as been in a coma and back.  Additionally,  I volunteer my time at local hospital subacute units to help those patients with  head injuries.  I try to be the voice for the voiceless.   I am currently producing my own videos about head trauma and the long road to recovery.
