I am a 42 year old, full time student at NC Central working on getting my degree in social work. I wasn't feeling well, so I went to get checked 'cause I thought I had the flu. To my surprise my diagnosis came back as acute myeloid leukemia.
The prognosis, has 33% chance of cure with chemo, 33% chance remission with reoccurence and 33% chance chemo does not work and we do bone marrow transplant.
I'm admitted at Duke Hospital and my first chemo round begins Monday, January 26th. I will be here for at least one month. I will require more hopsital stays as the treatments progress.
In all scenarios the medical costs are extensive and my insurance will not cover them. I also have living expenses to take care of such as rent and animal care for my pets.
My family, and friends are trying to maintain a positive outlook on this tragic situation, but the reality is that I have already incurred massive medical bills resulting from the leukimia. While insurance will certainly cover a large portion of these immediate expenses, the road ahead will be a long and arduous one. The long-term outlook for how much of that can or will be covered is much less clear. Thus, any contributions made to this fundraising effort will be forwarded to my account, where non-covered costs related to my care and recovery will be the only priority.
Me, my family, and friends thank you in advance for taking a moment out of your day and showing me support. I will fight hard to recover quickly and all of your efforts and contributions are greatly appreciated!!
