Matthew's Hearing Fund

Matthew is my nine year old nephew.  He has a twin sister, two older sisters and four older brothers.  Yes, Matthew is one of eight kids.  He's hilarious, smart, and truly one of the most kind and gentle 9 year old souls that I have ever known.  Last February, Matthew was diagnosed with moderate-severe hearing loss.  From birth, Matthew passed every screening.  He never struggled with his hearing, learning, or appeared to be in a deficit.  As if the diagnosis wasn't enough, battling the insurance company to pay for his hearing aids was exhausting. I am not sure how you can deny hearing aids to anyone, let alone a child.  Such a devise is needed for shear quality of life. But shockingly, Matthew was the first child in Maryland to be denied full coverage.

Since his diagnosis, my sister's family has been to over 50 specialist appointments, and countless more are yet to come.  Matthew's diagnosis has worsened since his initial visit.  He now is completely deaf in his left ear and declining, even with his aids.  This makes him a candidate for cochlear implants.  With his rapid decline, doctors are looking to have this surgery performed sooner rather than later.

To say that this has been a devastating, expensive and exhausting journey would be stating the obvious.  One might think Matthew would be sad and/or angry.  Not Matthew.  This boy goes to his numerous appointments all smiles, invites his specialists to church, and prays every night, thanking Jesus for his hearing aids and amazing doctors.  He is honestly inspiring to all he meets. When faced with a real possibility he could lose his ability to ever hear the world again, Matthew smiles.

So I am asking on behalf of my sister, Heather Duzan and her husband,  Alex Duzan, to give even a small amount for Matthew.  Between the hearing aids, his therapy,  countless appointments, and now his impending surgery--the costs are high.  My sister is not on FB and honestly will be horrified that I have set this up.  But, we are community.  Humanity is not all evil and I am reaching out to ask for help.  If you can give, thank you.  If you can pray, please do.  This boy is worth it.
