Math Reform Initiative - Starting a 501(c)(4)

Hi, my name is Edward and I'm raising money to start a 501(c)(4) organization for a petition I'm starting in Ohio. You can read all about this (and the Math Reform Initiative) at this link.

Did you know that 78% of Americans say that they use no more than addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in their jobs?

I'm starting a petition in Ohio to reduce the high school math credit requirement from 4 to 2 credits and add half-credit courses in mental health, sex education, entrepreneurship, and media literacy. I believe that we teach high school students too much math that the average adult doesn't use in their daily lives and not enough real-life skills that will prepare them for adult life. I don't know about you, but I've never heard a regular adult say "I wish I had learned more math in high school."

To successfully do this petition, I'll have to collect +/- 175,000 signatures from registered Ohio voters. To execute a project of such an immense scale, I have to start a 501(c)(4) organization so that I can formally raise funds, run marketing campaigns, pay for legal advice, and more. I'll use the money from this GoFundMe campaign to:

  • Pay my attorney to file the necessary paperwork with the IRS to start a 501(c)(4) organization and write the petition ($1,500).
  • Launch a website and run a marketing campaign to launch the petition and the new organization ($500).

I've raised $400 so far from my amazing, generous friends and family, which leaves me with $1,600 to go.

I know that money is tight for many people these days so I understand if you can't donate to this cause. If you don't have the money to give but you do believe in this story and mission, please share it with your friends, family, colleagues, and everyone you know. I also have a list of in-kind services that I need that you can find at the bottom of this post.

Thank you!
