Mateo - Retinoblastoma

Welcome to Mateo’s page. Mateo is a beautiful and happy  now 21 months old boy who is the youngest brother to Lucas and Marcus. On Thursday August 16, 2018, the lives of Mateo, his parents Jorge and Alina, and his brothers were forever changed.  Doctors saw a tumour in Mateo’s right eye and several in the left eye. After receiving the diagnosis of Retinoblastoma, Mateo at 6 months old underwent surgery on Aug 22, 2018 at Toronto’s Sick Kids Hospital to remove his right eye and receive laser treatment on the left eye. The journey for this family is just beginning as they await the course that is yet to be set for them. Chemo and/or radiation is still an unknown. 

Frequent assessments, tests and scans will be necessary until Mateo is of school age as tumours can commonly reoccur.
