We are Joshua and Rachel Mast of Nampa, Idaho.
Thank you for taking the time to read about our dream to take our passions and talents out into the world! I am a Licensed Midwife and my husband, Joshua, is a professional photographer. Together, we are committed to making an impact in the world through our vocations.
Our jobs as midwife and photographer have already taken us to the Philippines, and we now have the opportunity to use our skills in India.
Four years ago, I was privileged to attend a birth here in Idaho for a family from India. That family is now expecting again in June, but, due to a severe illness of a family member and associated financial strain, they are unable to come to the United States for the delivery of their second child. This family has graciously offered to open their home to Joshua and me for a month, in exchange for my coming to India to attend their birth.
Both the maternal and infant mortality rates are significantly higher in India than in the United States, and even though it is only one birth, I hope to make a positive impact using my skills as a midwife to keep this mother and baby safe and well loved. I am also making connections with other birth workers and health care providers in the area where we are staying in hopes of being able to provide some continuing education on maternal child health.
Joshua will be there to document all of my work as well as our other experiences in India and we will be sharing our photos and stories with you all along the way! We hope this trip will provide us with knowledge and greater understanding of how we might continue to use our skills together in meaningful ways with people throughout the world.
Since neither Joshua nor I will be paid for our work overseas, the funds we raise here will cover not only our trip to India, but also our bills back home during June and July, since we won’t be earning money during those months.
This opportunity came at a time when we were exploring our mutual goals and options. While the timing of this trip could not be better in the big picture, it is also happening so quickly, we realize we must do something we aren’t used to doing… asking for help from others.
As a couple we’ve been blessed to receive amazing emotional support– both for our marriage and our chosen vocations. We are incredibly grateful to those who are willing to contribute sustainable support for us at this time.
