Masters 2.0

** za hrvatski, scrollajte niže **

Thanks to family, friends and supporters, my crowdfunding campaign for my first two Master's courses last year was a resounding success. Despite applying for scholarships and grants, I haven't managed to secure funding for my third course, which begins in January. For this reason, I am running Help Me Become a Master Crowdfunding 2.0.

Crowdfunding is the only way I can finance the course. Without funding, I cannot take the next course.

About me

I am a passionate and visionary advocate for reproductive rights, especially as they relate to maternity care. My work goes from the community to the international level, networking stakeholders to improve maternity services and policies. I need your help to finance my third course in my Master's Program in Maternal and Infant Health at the University of Dundee.

Why I need YOU
I began my studies at the University of Dundee last (school) year and ran a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo to fund the first two courses - successfully thanks to friends, family and supporters.

In the meantime I've applied for a number of scholarships (the Wellcome Fund, Canadian Association of University Women and more) but for now, no luck.  I will continue searching (and appreciate any tips :)).

Now as I begin a new school year, I need to raise money for my third course - a total of 2000 Canadian dollars.

The money collected in this campaign will be used for:

- covering the costs of my tuition and student fees for one (my third of six) courses
- covering the costs of the campaign (fees, visuals, bank transfers)

If Canadian dollars aren't your thing, my budget is about 1200 GBP or 1500 USD or 1300 EUR or 9000 HRK.

How can you help?

All donations help bring me closer to my goal, so the best way you can help is by breaking out your wallet and donating. Sharing this campaign on your social media (Twitter and Facebook especially) along with a sentence or two why you personally think it's important is another great way to help encourage people in your networks to donate as well.

Examples like "Educating and empowering a generation of leaders in maternity care will help make systems accountable to women and babies. Women like Daniela can make that happen, and every donation helps her come closer to her goal."

What if I don't have a credit card?

If you are interested in donating via a bank account, please contact me for my IBAN or bank account details.

Why are you using a new crowdfunding platform?
Last year, I used Generosity.com, which was an arm of Indiegogo. The company has undergone some changes, and Generosity.com has been closed and all its campaigns have been "bumped" to Indiegogo for archiving. GoFundMe.com is Indiegogo's new personal/charity crowdfunding site. So basically, it's all the same.

Why don't you take out a loan, scholarship or get government funding?

Although a valuable and important topic, getting a master's degree in this topic doesn't have the salary increasing power of let's say, an MBA. There is little or no financial return on investment.

Studying in the UK is its own challenge, because well, the British pound and its insane exchange rate.
My citizenship(s) don't open up any doors regarding funding or state grants, so I quite literally have to knock on hundreds of doors, by myself.

Crowdfunding is the only way I can fund my third course in January.

Why should I support you?

Modern maternity care leaves much to be desired. Depending on the region you live in, care can be vastly different from ideal, and unfortunately, in many regions harmful practices abound.

The movement for improvements in maternity care needs leaders and participants who are well-educated on health systems, policy and evidence. It also needs people with an ear to the ground, linking with their local communities to answer to their needs. People like me are that link, and by investing in us, you are investing in a movement and change - that our daughters and granddaughters will inherit a better maternity system that puts them, not itself, in focus.

All that matters is a healthy baby?

In high resource countries, the vast majority of women and babies survive childbirth. However, maternity systems do not really place much emphasis on whether they thrive during and after this period. A mother and baby's well-being are much more than just survival - physical and psychological health and integrity are as important as survival if we want to have a society of healthy families.

What do you mean by harmful practices?

Harmful practices are interventions that, used routinely on the majority of women, cause more harm than benefit. Some of these include

- episiotomy (genital cutting as a baby is being born),
- shaving a woman's pubic hair and giving her an enema,
- forcing a woman to lie on her back throughout labour and birth,
- stimulating a woman's contractions with medication to the point where her baby is in danger so that she consents to a caesarean ("pit to distress"),
- giving a woman medications without her knowledge during labour and more.

If these practices sound eerily like gender-based violence, that's because they are. One harmful practice I am particularly interested in, and which I want to base my master's thesis, is the Kristeller Maneuver.

My story

Pregnant with my second child ten years ago, I was determined that things would be different than in my first pregnancy, and that I would be the decision maker this time around, insisting on evidence and dialogue. I hit every single roadblock, trap and barrier, was forced into a caesarean I didn't need or want. I knew that there was something wrong with the maternity care system, not with me, and the only way to pull myself out of the situation was to learn as much as I could. For two years I soaked up information, began attending conferences, networking with healthcare providers and researchers, and soon was heading the Reproductive Rights Program of a national NGO dealing with maternity care, first as a volunteer and later as an employee.

Plans for after I complete my degree I plan on conducting research into harmful practices and networking with other researchers. This data will then be a tool for continued advocacy for improving maternity services.

Thank you for helping me take my first steps on my funding and learning journeys.

32821682_1536489080488060_r.jpeg

Kako to misliš, štetne prakse?

- Brijanje ženinih stidnih dlačica i davanje klistira
